South Porch Art Residency

In April I had the pleasure of spending a week making art at South Porch Artist Residency in Summerville, SC. It was not a solo residency - I was grateful to be in the company of four other wonderful women. Here is our home and studio for the week. It’s much bigger than it looks, and is surrounded by beautiful woods and many kinds of wildlife!

Below is some of the work I made - mostly mixed media collage in sketchbooks. I explored a variety of ideas to expand on later.

Here I am at my desk, surrounded by all manner of art-making materials.

Laura, Emily, Melissa, myself, and Darcy. This flower mandala is collaborative and ephemeral piece of art we made together using natural materials. A great exercise in letting go of control and being completely in the moment.

Emily Jalinsky and I in Charleston - a very colorful town.

We spent one day in Charleston and one day at Folly Beach. I was thrilled to go bodysurfing in the ocean because you know the beach is my most happy place.

I returned home to Iowa City refreshed and inspired by the whole experience, and I look forward to planning my next residency! South Porch will be moving to Central Mexico after this summer, so I hope to spend a week or two there once they are relocated.
